It is with great sadness that I share with our National Shrine of the Little Flower family the death of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, today, April 21, 2025. In this Easter Season, however, we rejoice in the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and we pray that our beloved Universal Shepherd will share in the eternal joy of God’s heavenly kingdom this day.
Taking the name “Francis” proved to be most fitting for our Holy Father, since he was indeed a man of peace, poverty, and one who loved and protected creation. His love was coupled with mercy and care, and he often spoke of the Church as a “field hospital.” The “field hospital” metaphor highlights the Church’s role as a place of healing and care, where compassion and mercy are offered to those in need.
Eternal rest grant unto Pope Francis O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica will celebrate a Mass of Suffrage on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. for Pope Francis followed by reciting the Rosary for the repose of his soul.
Requiescat in Pace,
Rev. John R. Bettin
Rector
