Altar Servers are individuals who minister to the parish through assisting the priest during Mass, weddings, funerals, and special events. Most altar servers are youth, and training is held several times a year for both boys and girls grades 4 and up. Altar serving is open to any youth, not just Shrine Catholic School students.
Adult altar servers are also welcome to participate in this ministry, and generally consist of senior men who enjoy the opportunity to assist Mass.

This ministry assists the priest in the service of distributing the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass, or by taking the Eucharist to the homebound, those living in assisted living, or ill in a hospital. For more information, contact Paula Dixon, Pastoral Associate at 248-541-4122 ext. 411.
The heart of a ministry in lectoring is setting hearts on fire for God and his Holy Word by reading the first and second readings during Mass. Lectoring requires specific training, usually just one session, for both adults and students.
Lector training includes public speaking techniques of diaphragmatic breathing, articulation and diction, microphone usage, inflections, pausing, pacing, and other techniques. Attendees learn important practice tips and oral muscular exercises to further ready them for this important ministry. The training also includes the mechanics of lectoring at the Shrine, carrying in the Word during the procession, approaching and retreating from the altar, and when to bow.
Interested adults should contact Lisa Pickering at [email protected]. Interested students grades 7 - 12 should contact Janie Lynch at [email protected].

Funeral servers assist the priest during funeral Masses at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica.
Note: Due to the limited number of funerals, this ministry is staffed by a small group. Presently, we are not looking for new candidates to become members.

Ushers serve the parish by collecting donations during Mass, seating parishioners, handing out the bulletin, and maintaining the order and security of services as an important gift of hospitality. Ushers serve during weekend Masses, Holy Days, and other special services.
Ushers are usually the first formal representatives of the parish encountered by worshippers as they enter the church and are a vital part of the ministry of hospitality at Shrine Parish.
Everyone is welcome to join, provided they are a registered member of the parish and are at least 13 years old.
