The first thing you will see this November is the initial work beginning on the landscape assessment project. We will be utilizing volunteers and professional planners in the process which will include removal of overgrown shrubs starting at the youth room entrance and all the way around the tower and ending at the West side12 Mile entrance. This project is necessary for several reasons. The shrubs are severely overgrown and can no longer be properly trimmed. It will provide safety around the building, prepare for the roof scaffolding prior to the ground freezing, and prep for new planting next year. Shrubs will be cleared, stumped and the ground leveled. This is a fairly inexpensive project leading up to the more intense roof work on the lantern of the Basilica which we hope to begin in December.
A few other December projects are planned as well. The Heritage Hall carpet has been deteriorating over the past 15 years and it is separating from its backing. There are some trip hazards where it is wrinkled and so the decision was made to replace it. Finally, you may have noticed the damaged awning over the ramp at the Northwood entrance to the church. This was caused by storm damage from late last summer. Thankfully, insurance will be covering this repair. The entire awning fabric and side panels will be replaced at the Northwood ramp. Due to material delivery delays, December 27-29 is the scheduled removal date and re-install will be January 13-15. I know that there are many other projects that call for attention but they will require more investment and planning and are on the honey do list, meaning "when we get the honey we will do them."
